A Personal Note from Carmin

Do you have the courage to follow your dream even if it means taking a risk?  Do you allow the criticisms or issues of others stop you from following your dream? To really live the life of your dreams, you must answer no to both of these questions.

The two young men in this picture are living their dreams.

The young man on the right is my son, David Dolphy. David followed society's script and graduated from college with honors.  College is where he realized his passion and what he was sent here to do – entertain people through acting.  Following college graduation, David tried to play the game and got a job, sat in a cubicle doing mindless tasks while others who are less smart than he “managed” him. He kept quiet, worked and saved his money.  Then in the spring of 2008, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a professional actor.  He is currently studying under and being mentored by actress, Tasha Smith, who has had leading roles in several Tyler Perry movies. The only script you need to follow is the one that leads you to your dreams.

The young man on the left is an “adopted” nephew. As a boy, children at church made fun of and laughed at the size of his feet causing him to feel a bit ostracized.  My mother reached out to him and told him that his feet were so large because “God was building a big foundation and builders don’t build a skyscraper without first laying a big foundation.”  This young man’s name is Leger Douzable and inspite of the childhood ridicule, standing at 6' 5" and 300 pounds, he is now a member of the NFL's New York Giants (#78) and the truck they are standing in front of is his brand spanking new Ford F250.  Who’s laughing now?

There are two things you need to live the life of your dreams:  courage to follow your "script" and belief in yourself, regardless of what others say or think.

Recently I surveyed subscribers of this newsletter and a large number of you responded that the top business challenge you face is financing your business.  The second largest challenge was marketing your business.

So we will tackle the largest problem first – lack of financing for your business.

It seems as if we cannot get away from the bad news regarding the economy. People are being laid off, the stock market flips and flops like a fish out of water and the President Obama has to jump through hoops to try to convince Congress to pass another stimulus package for the American people.

Sure, banks may not be lending money to home-based and small business owners, but there are some things you can do to finance your business whether you are still employed working a traditional job, whether you are about to throw in the towel and give up your dream of entrepreneurship and go back to work (if you can find a job), or whether you need money to further develop and expand your business.

There are several ways you can finance your dream business:

  1. You can go the traditional route and approach a lending institution for a small business loan or you can borrow money from family and friends.  If you borrow from friends or family, make sure that enter into a written agreement and make sure you honor that agreement. If you must change the terms, be up front and renegotiate the terms.
  2. You can go to the non-traditional route and seek money from venture capitalists or angel investors. Just beware that one criteria for venture capitalists or angel investors is that in exchange for their money, they want to own a portion of your business.
  3. You can finance your business using your own money, including your retirement funds (without penalty).  One way that you can start your business with your own money is to continue working a traditional jobs and devoting a certain amount of time and money each week to your business.  Once your income from the business covers all of your bills, you are ready to work the business full-time.
  4. You can seek grant funding.  Grant funding will require a lot of time and research but if you are willing to spend the time, you could secure a federal grant for your business.  However, I would caution not to buy into the many “get grant money for your business” schemes and scams on the internet.

Your decision regarding the way to finance your business will be based on your personal situation, credit condition and other factors.  You need to do your research and you need good information that is not tied into any type of scheme or scam.  In an upcoming teleseminar I will present the information you need to make a well-informed decision about how to finance your business.

Join me for the How to Find Money to Finance Your Business Teleseminar to learn how you can finance your business regardless of your credit history, your job situation and how you can seek federal grant funding without being scammed.  To get the details, please visit:

A recession is no time to be a shrinking violet when it comes to your marketing.  You must market now more than ever.  If you are not quite sure what to do first, I recommend the Ebook, How to Market on the Internet.

This Ebook explains what internet marketing is, shares steps to developing a marketing strategy and reveals various types of profitable internet marketing ideas. In addition to the Ebook, you receive TWO bonuses, 40 free marketing ideas and a marketing calendar to help you get started.

If you don't have a backup system in place to protect the files on your computer, please don't wait another day to do so!  I feel really bad when someone tells me that they have lost all of the files on their computer, including many one-of-a-kind files that will be difficult to recreate.  People lose their files because their system crashed for some reason.  Make sure this does not happen to you.  Companies online will store your data for free or at a very low monthly fee.  You can get 2GB Totally Free Online Backup! Compliments of Mozy.  This is the system I use to store my personal and e-BlackWomenNetwork files.
